Visa, immigration, and customs information

Important Notice Entry requirements can change at any time. Always verify current requirements with official government sources before traveling.
Information last reviewed December 2024. Always verify with official government sources and the nearest Central African Republic embassy or consulate before traveling, as requirements change frequently.
Bangui, the capital of the Central African Republic (CAR), requires careful preparation for entry due to stringent visa requirements and security considerations. All foreign nationals, with very limited exceptions, must obtain a visa prior to arrival. The country does not offer visa-on-arrival services at Bangui M'Poko International Airport, making advance planning essential. Entry requirements include valid travel documents, proof of yellow fever vaccination, and appropriate visa authorization. The immigration process at Bangui M'Poko International Airport involves document verification, biometric data collection, and customs inspection. Travelers should be prepared for thorough scrutiny of documents and potential delays. Due to the security situation in the Central African Republic, travelers are strongly advised to register with their embassy upon arrival and maintain contact with their diplomatic mission throughout their stay. Travel insurance with comprehensive medical evacuation coverage is highly recommended. Before traveling to Bangui, it is crucial to check current travel advisories from your government, as many countries maintain warnings about travel to the CAR due to ongoing security concerns. Ensure all documentation is in order well before departure, as processing times for visas can be lengthy. Travelers should also arrange airport transfers in advance and avoid traveling after dark.

Ensure your policy covers emergency evacuation (minimum $100,000 coverage recommended), hospitalization, and repatriation. Keep policy documents and emergency contact numbers accessible at all times.

Current Health Requirements: Check current health requirements including any COVID-19 related measures before travel. Requirements may include pre-departure testing, vaccination certificates, or quarantine. Monitor updates from the World Health Organization (WHO), your government's health department, and the CAR Ministry of Health. Malaria prevention is essential year-round. Special Situations

Additional requirements for specific circumstances.

Traveling with Children

Children must have their own passport and visa. Yellow fever vaccination is required for children over 1 year old. Minors traveling without both parents should carry notarized parental consent letters in French, signed by absent parent(s), along with copies of parents' passports. Single parents should carry child's birth certificate showing parental relationship. Adoption papers should be carried for adopted children. Due to security concerns, traveling to the CAR with children is generally not recommended unless essential.

Traveling with Pets

Importing pets into the Central African Republic requires: valid rabies vaccination certificate (administered at least 30 days but not more than 12 months before travel), veterinary health certificate issued within 10 days of travel, import permit from CAR Ministry of Agriculture (apply well in advance), microchip identification recommended. Pets may be quarantined upon arrival if documentation is incomplete. Check with your airline regarding pet transport policies. Consider carefully whether bringing pets is advisable given limited veterinary services and security situation.

Extended Stays

Tourist visas typically allow stays of 30-90 days. For longer stays, apply for visa extension at the Direction Générale de la Documentation et de l'Immigration (DGDI) in Bangui before your visa expires. Extensions are not guaranteed and require: valid passport, current visa, proof of accommodation, proof of financial means, reason for extension, and fee payment. Business visas may allow longer initial stays. For stays exceeding 90 days, residence permits may be required. Working in the CAR requires work permits obtained through sponsoring organizations. Overstaying your visa can result in fines, detention, and deportation. Plan extensions well before expiration as processing can be slow.

Business Travelers

Business travelers must obtain business visas prior to arrival. Requirements include invitation letter from CAR-based company or organization, letter from employer explaining purpose of visit, proof of business registration, and higher visa fees than tourist visas. Business travelers should register with local authorities upon arrival if staying extended periods. Keep all business documentation accessible. Business travelers may face additional scrutiny at immigration and checkpoints.

Journalists and Media

Journalists and media professionals require special journalist visas and accreditation from the CAR Ministry of Communication. Apply well in advance through CAR embassy with: letter from media organization, detailed itinerary, equipment list, and purpose of coverage. Unauthorized journalism activities can result in detention, equipment confiscation, and deportation. Filming and photography require permits in many areas. Always seek permission before filming, especially near government buildings, military installations, or security forces.

Humanitarian and NGO Workers

NGO workers and humanitarian staff require appropriate visas (often business or special mission visas) and must be registered with relevant CAR ministries. Organizations should facilitate visa applications and provide necessary documentation. Carry identification from your organization at all times. NGO vehicles and staff may require special permits for movement outside Bangui. Coordinate with UN security (MINUSCA) for security updates and movement advisories.
